Minister comes up with weaker law against temporary letting
On Thursday 23 March, the Lower House will debate the initiative bill by the PvdA and the Christian Union to again ban temporary contracts of up to two years for independent living accommodation. Meanwhile, minister De Jonge has published weaker legal protection for tenants.
The Woonbond calls on the House to vote in favour of the initiative bill by PvdA and ChristenUnie, but also to remove the five-year contracts for rooms from the law again. Otherwise, there is a danger that pawnbrokers will start squatting just to continue using temporary rental contracts. An amendment by SP MP Sandra Beckerman also suggests amending the law in this way. Through this route, permanent rent and housing security will become the norm again. Read full article in Dutch…
Parliament majority against temporary letting within reach
On 23 March, the Lower House debated the ‘Fixed Rental Contracts’ own-initiative bill by the PvdA and the Christian Union, which would ban generic temporary contracts of up to two years for rental properties again. During the debate, much of the opposition, as well as coalition party D66, appeared to support the bill. The CDA is not yet certain of support, and in any case wants a guarantee that temporary contracts can continue to be used for certain target groups. Incidentally, the bill against regular temporary contracts does not prohibit this either. Professor ‘scraps’ social housing ambition Hugo de Jonge: ‘Supply continues to fall’
The cabinet has a well-known ambition to tackle the housing market. Housing minister Hugo de Jonge wants to build houses and create affordable homes. Also for the social rented sector. But things are not at all favourable with the latter. On the contrary, the number of social rented homes continues to decline, concludes professor Johan Conijn.
As is the case for pretty much the entire housing market, it is not easy to find a social rented house. On the contrary, the waiting lists are only growing. Minister Hugo de Jonge (housing) has ambitious plans regarding the housing market, but these plans apparently do not change the decreasing supply on the social rental market.
