Moving to a new apartment

You rented a new apartment, and now?

How awesome, congratulations with your new apartment. Exciting times are ahead, but moving is a stressful time. You have to think about many things and make loads of arrangements. Let’s hope you don’t forget anything…

Packing

Packing properly seems daft, but it really helps, more than you might realize. Make sure you have quality boxes, ones that don’t tear easily. And very important, write on every box what the contents are. This way you won’t drop a box with breakables too hard. Also, very convenient when unpacking. You can put all the boxes in the appropriate rooms before unpacking them. Nothing more annoying than unpacking a box of teacups in your bedroom while they need to be downstairs in your kitchen cabinets.

Cleaning

Of course, you clean your house regularly, that is normal and hygienic. But when you move, you need to leave the “old apartment” spick and span or spotless if you like. If you don’t, the landlord will often contract “way too expensive” cleaning service and subtract it from your deposit. That would be a shame, but there is an alternative. If you are too busy moving, you can of course contract a cleaning service yourself at normal rates. Check out Helpling for cleaning your apartment when you leave. And of course, you can also use them to clean your new apartment on a weekly basis if you are too busy working to do it yourself. Use this link to get a good rate and a discount.

First day in your new apartment.

Once you have moved into your new apartment, first unpack the boxes that you will need that same day. This sounds superfluous, but often you won’t be able to unpack all the boxes the first day, especially not if it is the same day you move. You will probably fall asleep before you achieve it. So think about your bed linen, cutlery and toilet paper…

Finally

Nowadays official government mail will automatically move with you once you register at your new address. But it is still wise to make a list of all subscription you have. Send them your change of address. And don’t forget to tell your friends and family. Good luck with moving.
